RELAX at the LODGE

There is so much to do, but you can always choose to just soak up the tranquillity and RELAX.

Yoga, Meditation, Swimming, Walking or Sunbathing, whatever or however you like to relax,

you can do it at the Lodge.

Hooked On Barrier Fishing

Hooked on Barrier fishing charters cater for groups wanting exclusive use of a boat, and individuals wanting a casual fishing trip. You set the pace: and choose from full or half day, fishing and diving charters. (Please note we are not a game fishing boat and our primary fishing area is on the west coast of Great Barrier Island)

We regularly catch Snapper, Kahawhai, Tarakihi, Trevally and Kingfish. As well as some great fishing, our charters get you closer to the most spectacular scenery on Great Barrier Island. We often see dolphins and whales on our trips (depending on the time of year), so bring your camera!

Salty Bushman - Surfboard & Wetsuite Hire

Salty Bushman Surfboard and Wetsuit Hire offers you the chance to get out on the waves while you're visiting the Barrier without the hassle of bringing all your own gear with you. Not only that - they deliver ! With a large range of soft-boards, shortboards and wetsuits in all sizes - you'll be out the back before you know it.

Glenfern Sanctuary

Glenfern sanctuary consists of 260 hectares of regenerating native bush, carefully monitored within a predator proof fence. Threatened and endangered species thrive in this lush habitat, and you have the chance to experience all of it. The Glenfern walk is a well formed track through 600 year old Kauri tree and over swing bridges.

The guided walk is recommended, you will be well informed by their environmental scientist resident. Visit for your chance to see brown teal, black petrel and other native bird life.

MOTUBIKES: Electric Motorbike Hire

Why not make the journey part of the adventure? Winding along forest roads with the wind in your hair, gliding silently under a starry night sky, chatting with friends as you cruise to beautiful white sand beaches.

Kaitoke Hot Springs

Kaitoke Hot Springs Track is a popular easy walk following the edge of the Kaitoke Swamp to hot springs. The walk can even by done with a baby buggy and the hot springs are a great destination for a picknick. Continue on the Peach Tree Track to Hirakimata / Mt Hobson. Duration: 45 minutes / 4 hrs one way

At Great Barrier Lodge we have good quality rental cars available for Guests to hire.

There is so much to see and experience on Great Barrier Island,

so getting out and about and exploring this amazing Island is made easy with a safe and comfortable rental car.

Let us know when and where you are arriving and we can arrange to collect you and drop you off again when you leave.

Good Heavens

Great Barrier Island is one of very few Dark Sky Sanctuaries in the world. Away from the lights of the big city, and as an off-the-grid island, our light pollution is minimal.

Gaze at super stars, constellations, any visible planets, deep sky objects, the Magellanic Clouds and the moon or the Milky Way. Use night binoculars and an 8″ Dobsonian telescope to get up close and personal with the stars.
